Nappy Changing

While you are at the hospital, the staff will show you how to change your baby’s nappy. You can also request more guidance from the Community team.

DVH ‘Changing a Nappy’ video shows what to expect from your baby’s nappies in the first few days and how to clean and change your baby.

Your baby’s nappy pattern in the early days

Your baby’s nappies are a good indication of how they are feeding and health.

Wet nappies

  • Day 1: At least 1 wet nappy (the amount of urine will be small)
  • If you are unsure whether your baby has passed urine, put some cotton wool in the nappy to assess whether it is wet.
  • Day 2: At least 2 wet nappies.
  • Day 3: At least 3 wet nappies.
  • Day 4: At least 4 wet nappies
  • Day 5: At least 5 wet nappies
  • Day 6 onwards: At least 6 wet heavy nappies

Soiled nappies

Apart from the number of nappies, it is important that the colour of your baby’s stools

changes. This is an indication that your baby is feeding well.

  • Day 1-2: At least 1 to 2 dark green/black stools
  • Day 3-4: At least 2 green stools
  • Day 5 onwards: At least 2 yellow
