  3. Introduction from our Director of Midwifery

Dina Stavrakelli

Director of Midwifery & Gynaecology

Having a baby is an exciting time. At Darent Valley Hospital, we believe it is important to offer all mothers-to-be choice and control throughout their birthing care and delivery. We support all of our women in making the right decision for them about where they would like to give birth and ensure they feel respected and supported at all times in developing their birth plan.

Part of our ethos is to tailor maternity care to individual needs, to provide a positive birth experience and part of this is ensuring that all women have a lead midwife throughout their care with us. Safety of mother and baby is paramount to us and we ensure that every woman has the safest possible birth for herself and her baby, whatever choices she makes for her birth.

Our dedicated team will look after you every step of the way, from your first antenatal appointment through to the health visitors seeing you and your baby at home after birth. Our expert team of experienced midwives and more than 10 consultant obstetricians are supported by a wider team of healthcare professionals including consultant anaesthetists, consultant paediatricians, sonographers and specialist midwives.

We can care for you if you have a straightforward pregnancy or if you and your baby are considered to be higher risk. If you require specialist medical support, you’re in the ideal location. The Fetal Medicine Team of highly skilled specialist doctors and midwives offer a diagnosis and treatment of complications which may arise in unborn babies. Specialist care is provided in our Special Care Baby Unit for all babies born from 32 weeks of gestation that may require any additional attention
