Washing and Bathing Your Baby

In the early days, your baby will probably need just 2 to 3 baths in a week; but you can still do a ‘top and tail’ wash every day. The Community team can support you with the first bath at home if you need reassurance.

General advice for bathing your baby.

  • Use plain water for at least the first month to help protect baby’s delicate skin. You can start using gentle baby soaps and shampoos later on.
  • Make sure that your baby is not hungry, tired, or has just been fed before you bath.
  • Choose a room is warm and draught free.
  • Have everything ready before your baby’s bath. They will need:
  • Never leave baby unattended.

What you will need:

  • Baby bath or clean washing up bowl.
  • Hooded towel.
  • Changing mat.
  • Cotton wool and sponge.
  • Clean nappy and change of clothes.
